HILL, Lily

Principal Matron
AANS
Principal Matron, 3rd Military District.

Long before war was declared Miss L. Hill held a recognised position in the nursing world. She was selected as matron when the Australian Army Nursing Service was established about 12 years, ago. The unit comprised a lady superintendent, matron, and 24 sisters.

In 1914, when Miss Bell, superintendent, left for the front, Miss Hill took charge and has had the responsibility of selecting nurses for active service ever, since. She interviews all the Victorian nurses who make application for army service. In the last two years she has selected about 320 nurses, for service abroad, and has interviewed about 1000.
Picture
Miss Hill is a trainee of the Melbourne Hospital, and was a sister there for three years. Later she had charge of Dr. W. Moore's hospital. For the last four years she has been managing a private hospital of her own.

There is no dearth of army service nurses, the supply being far greater than the demand. At the present time there are more than 300 names on the official list waiting for the coveted call to military duty. It is said that some of the nurses, afraid of missing their chance of being selected for military service, are evading the ordinary engagements of their profession.

Some time ago the rank of the various sisters was designated by sleeve bands and stripes. Now badges have been substituted. A major is entitled to a crown badge; a matron wears three stars on her shoulder strap; a sister, two stars: and a staff sister, one star.  Before the innovation a staff sister had no mark to indicate her professional rank.

The coat and skirt of grey material and neat felt hat now adopted by the military nurses is a marked improvement on the cloak and bonnet of the old-time nursing uniform.
