Staff-Nurse L. Abell, of Sydney, who three years ago proceeded to France to offer her services to the military authorities, and who is attached to Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve, writing to a friend from a casualty clearing station behind the lines, says:-"Much as I would like to come home, I do not wish to leave the boys or my work. I went with other nurses to one of the camps this morning, and the boys were delighted to see us, and made us very welcome. Most of them are from New South Wales, and I am going again tomorrow, because they will not be here long. They are dear brave boys, and I am proud of them. Those who could have come and didn't will be sorry some day."

Awarded the Royal Red Cross
'Advices just received describe the hasty removal of an important casualty clearing station immediately behind the lines on the Western front owing to the Allied army being pressed back by the oncoming German forces during a recent offensive. Less than half an hour's warning was given to the staff to prepare to leave with the wounded patients and to pack as best they could all the surgical appliances and stores. Doctors and nurses worked heroically, and while hospitals in the vicinity were being deliberately bombed by German aircraft, succeeded in re-establishing the station in a safer quarter. Sister Abell who has now been honoured with the Royal Red Cross was one of the heroic band of nurses.'

Sister Abell, who is a native of Wallsend, was trained at the Newcastle Hospital, and eventually became a charge nurse at that institution. Matron Greaves, of the Australian Voluntary Hospital, and Matron Veenman, of the Randwick Military Hospital, both of whom were some time ago decorated with the Royal Red Cross, were among her colleagues at Newcastle. For some years Sister Abell continued the practice of her profession in Sydney, and was attached to the Phillip-street Nurses' Home. Her services were secured by the Government on two occasions when special staffs of nurses were engaged to cope with serious epidemics at Coonamble and at Newcastle. Sister Abell is one of the foundation members of the Australasian Trained Nurses Association.
Desiring to assist in war work, Sister Abellin September 1915, proceeded at her own expense to London and France to volunteer her services to the military authorities, and was at once attached to Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. She was appointed to a military hospital at Talence, near Bordeaux then transferred to the 32nd Stationary Hospital at Boulogne, and afterwards was chosen for hospital barge work on one of the canals and was frequently under fire. Subsequently she received an appointment to the 14th General Stationary Hospital at Boulogne, and later was selected for duty at casualty clearing stations in the danger zone.
Sister Abell is at present the only Australian nurse on the staff of the No. 2 Casualty Clearing Station "somewhere in France."

A farewell party was tendered Sister Abell at the Lady Davidson Home on Monday night. Dr. F. R. Featherstone, medical superintendent, on behalf of the patients and staff, presented Sister Abell with a travelling clock and a wallet of notes. He eulogised her splendid war services, and said she had given 18 years of her life serving the Interests of the Digger. He had never heard her say a word to the detriment of the Australian soldier, and he viewed her going as a personal loss.

Matron Acres' Death
The announcement in yesterday's "Advocate" of the death in Melbourne of Miss Linda Acres came as a shock, as it is only a few months since deceased left here for the mainland. For nearly twelve months Miss Acres was matron of the local hospital, and her management of the business side of the institution was particularly noteworthy. It is understood that since her departure from Ulverstone she had to undergo an operation. The late Miss Acres served as a sister in the A.I.F. The Advocate Saturday 31 October 1925 page 4 Regret was felt in Ulverstone yesterday (writes our Ulverstone correspondent) when it was known that Matron Linda Acres had died at the Caulfield Repatriation Hospital, Victoria. For a considerable time, and until a few months ago, Matron Acres had been matron at the Ulverstone General Hospital. During her stay there she proved a devoted worker in the interests of the hospital, and many of the recent improvements were largely due to her energy in canvassing for funds. She had a long career of usefulness to her credit, having been for many years matron of the Beaconsfield Hospital. She served with credit also at the war as an army nurse. The Examiner Saturday 31 October 1925 |
ADAMS, Belle
Miss Belle Adams, has offered her services as a war nurse. As is already known, Mrs. Aughtie, of Tumbarumba, has offered her services for the nursing staff, and the names of two young ladies at Glenroy have been mentioned as having offered to go with the Red Cross Company. So all things taken into consideration, our little way back district is not the least bit behind the door in loyalty.

Known as Lily, Marion Lillian Addison had moved from Adelaide to Melbourne by 1910. In 1906 she first won the Victorian Ladies' Tennis Championship.
As a tennis player she had significant success in Australia and often played doubles with her brother J. J. Addison. She was the South Australian Ladies Tennis Champion in 1906, 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911. She was holder of the Victorian Ladies' singles championship and mixed doubles title in 1909. In 1910 she won all three events in the New South Wales Tennis Championships - the ladies' singles, ladies' doubles and challenge pairs. In 1911 she was both Victorian and New South Wales State Ladies Tennis Champion. In late 1913, at the age of twenty seven, she commenced nursing training at the Melbourne Hospital, graduating in early 1917. The many friends of Matron and Sister Caroline Allen, late of Anatole Hospital, Kalgoorlie, will be glad to hear news of them. After nursing at the front during the years of the great war they have now settled at Udue-road, Harvey, in the south-west of W.A., on an orange and lemon orchard. They are fascinated with the work, and find it a beneficial departure from the strain of professional nursing. They send greetings to. their Kalgoorlie friends.

The many goldfields friends of Sister Hester Caroline Allen, who for many years conducted Anatole Hospital in Brookman-street, will be
pleased to learn that she will be paying a short visit to Kalgoorlie before journeying on to Sydney to take a post graduate course in child welfare. Sister Caroline was amongst the first of our nurses to volunteer for war service and was with the Anzacs at Gallipoli, after wards going to France and in England. On returning to Australia after the war. she felt she needed rest and took up an orange grove at Harvey. The call of her life's work, however, has made it necessary to give it up, in order that she may continue her nursing career, and she is now en route to Sydney for the
purpose. She will be the guest or Mrs Wm. Schwann, of Outridge terrace, during her short stay here.
