Hot water Bags Frozen.
After over two years' absence on duty in Salonica, Nurse Marian Shand writes from a 'con camp' in the hills: "We are all supposed to be convalescing, but I have not been ill. This Is what we call two weeks 'baksheesh,' or thrown in. It's glorious, but broilling, yet within half an hour's walk we can get to ice-pits. But what else would one expect in Greece, for is it not supposed to be the origin of mystery? We are now well acquainted with a 'Vardar' wind, which, if it follows all the rules and regulations, should last three days. it penetrates everything. When the snow came we had to live in gum boots, then weeks of frost froze everything - we even had to keep the medicines near the stove. In the morning out hot-water bags were frozen in bed, and our gum boots frozen to the floor. We had some great sport snow-fighting."

MRS. L. R. DeGARIS
Penola, Saturday.
The death of Mrs. L. R. DeGaris occurred at her home in Penola on Friday morning. It was not unexpected, as she had been seriously ill for two years. Prior to her illness Mrs. DeGaris took a keen interest in church work and all charitable efforts, and endeared herself to all who came in contact with her. When the Great War commenced the deceased was a nurse in Western Australia, and offered her services to the defence department. She had over two years service with the A.A.N.S. in Egypt. It is probable that during her experience in war time, in serving the Empire, the foundations were laid for her two years' suffering which ended a useful life.
It was while Mr. L. R. DeGaris was on service in Egypt that he met his wife, and intense sympathy with him
is felt throughout the district.
The funeral was held this afternoon, and was very largely attended. The beautiful lot of floral tributes, including a wreath from the ladies of St. Andrew's Church, testified to the high esteem in which the deceased lady was held by the residents of Penola. The pall bearers were the three brothers of the bereaved husband, and Dr. R. G.Burnard, a brother-in-law. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Ralph Rankin, and the mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Platt Bros., Narracoorte.

OBITUARY
Sister Emily Sheil
Sister Emily Jane Sheil, who died on Saturday, at the Yarrawonga Hospital, at the age of 59, was the daughter of a very old district family, and believed to be one of two sisters who trained at the Hay Hospital to go overseas in the nursing services in the 1914-18 war.
Sister Sheil was the eldest daughter of the late John Dennis Sheil, who came to this district as a lad in the late 1860's to the service of Mr. Peter Tyson, of Corrong. The Sheil and the Tyson families have remained very closely associated practically ever since, and have been holders of neighbouring land for a long time. In due time Mr. J. D. Sheil, known locally as Dan Sheil, took up land in the Mossgiel district known as Weeonga. Later, after the 1902 drought, this was acquired by one of the larger holdings and in due time returned to his son, Will, as an additional Western Lands block. Sister Sheil trained as a nurse in the Hay Hospital, and after completing her course enlisted and left Hay with her trainee friend, Sister Frost. Illness, on the part of Sister Sheil caused their separation on the voyage overseas. She served in England and Egypt and later on a hospital ship making innumerable trips between Australia and the areas of battle. On return from service she conducted a private hospital in Randwick, and later returned to the land on a soldiers' block in the Mossgiel district. She later left this for the Merool Irrigation Area, and returned about 1937 to purchase a Western Lands holding on Corrong. On the outbreak of war in 1939, Sister Sheil returned to nursing and spent a considerable amount of time in the service of the Ministry of Munitions, as relieving factory sister. She was for a time in charge of the casualty room at the Hay Munitions Factory, and up to a few days before her death was in charge of the casualty department at Yarrawonga Explosives Factory. Whilst in the outback and when in town, Sister Sheil never tired of using her nursing skill and tireless energies in giving care and succor to neighbours in need of nursing care. In Yarrawonga when shortage of staff all but closed up the hospital in that centre, she had a regular round of calls to make to give assistance at the sick bed of the townspeople, after her day's work at the factory. She remained at her post there until a few days before entering hospital for an operation, performed as a desperate attempt to save her, life. Although she pulled through the operation, she was too ill to regain her strength and passed away on Saturday. The funeral was held yesterday
from the Church of England, to the Hay Cemetery. The Rev. Canon F. L. Cuttriss conducted the services whilst the large attendance of returned soldiers in addition to a large number of district residents, paid their last offices of respect to a comrade in arms. The R.S.L. formed a guard of honour and the Last Post was sounded over the grave. Mr. Henry Hyde carried out the funeral arrangements. Of a family of seven, one sister, Maggie (Mrs. M. I. Browne, Calooli), and three brothers, Walter (Calooli), Bill (Courtrfti, Mossgiel), and George (Griffith) survive.

MRS. V. H. WURM PASSES
Death In Adelaide Private Hospital
General regret was expressed in Pirieat the week-end when it became known that Mrs. Victoria Helena Wurm had died on Saturday in an Adelaide private hospital. She was 73 years of age.
Mrs. Wurm, who had lived in Pirie early 20 years, left here for Adelaide soon after the death last year of her husband—Mr. Fred H. Wurm. For several years her health had been failing, and for some time before her death she had been practically without sight.
Mrs. Wurm was best known for her practical work in the cause of humanity. She spent the greater part of her life studying and practising the art of the masseuse. Many folk fit and well today have reason to thank, her skilled hands.
Born Victoria Helena De Cean, she was a South Australian. Early in life her thoughts turned to the nursing profession, and she sought training.
Her first marriage, was to Mr. Arthur Shorney, brother of Dr. Shorney, a specialist, of Adelaide, and she lived at Semaphore some years.
Left a widow, she entered Adelaide Hospital as a masseuse and achieved an enviable reputation. Her skill caused her services to be in constant demand, and her credentials took her to an important post in Melbourne.
On Active Service
Soon after war broke out in 1914 and Australian nurses were called for, Mrs. Wurm enlisted and proceeded overseas, where she gave valuable service in massaging.
On her return to Australia she married Mr. Wurm, whom she had known for many, years, and settled down with him in Balmoral road, Pirie South.
She became deeply interested in the work of Pirie Ladies' Benevolent Society, with which she spent six years, filling the post of secretary for a period.
She was indefatigable in her work, and amazed her friends with her vitality. Her skilled hands were seldom still. Failing Health and eye sight forced her to withdraw in later years.
It is stated that a few days ago she had a fall at the hospital and fractured a leg. She rapidly sank and died on Saturday.
The remains were taken from the residence of a nephew, Mr. L. De Cean, Branareth street, Tusmore, yesterday afternoon for cremation.

WAR NURSE GONE
Sister Mary Caroline Shortall passed away last weekend, her end coming in the Caulfield Repatriation Hospital, where she did wonderful work. Sister Shortall was one of the most popular figures o the war. She practically dedicated her life to the nursing of the soldiers and from the first until about two months ago, when she became ill, she never let up. She served in all the Australian hospitals in France, till 1919, when she returned and joined the staff of the Macleod Sanatorium. For the past eight years she was a tower of strength at the Caulfield Repatriation Hospital, where she was loved by all —both soldiers and nurses. She will be greatly missed.
