NURSE ON DUTY FOR 24 HOURS A DAY

SISTER M. Lemon, who is in sole charge of the Point McLeay Mission Station hospital, is the only medical officer for the aborigines from Swan Reach, far up the Murray, to about 100 miles down the Coorong.  She is on duty for 24 hours a day. Only a week or two ago she was called up in the middle of the night to journey to the Coorong to tend a sick native.  So far this year 22 babies have been born at the mission, and it all means extra work for Sister Lenton. Until recently she had to be the community's dentist, too. But now a dentist visits the mission periodically. The nearest doctor is 30 miles away, and Sister performs many minor surgical operations. Sister Lenton is proud of her dispensary, which she claims to be as well equipped as any city chemist shop.

Queenslanders who fought in the Great War

In Messrs. Meacham & Leyland's window is exhibited a very neat certificate framed in oak, which was presented by residents of Rockhampton to Sister Beatrice Alice Leyland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Leyland.

The address reads as follows "To Sister Beatrice A. Leyland. A A.N S. - On behalf of the residents of Rockhampton and District we desire to express to you our high appreciation of the service you have so nobly rendered in this, the most cruel of all wars. We admire the patriotic heroism you displayed in voluntarily going overseas and facing the dread perils of war and disease. The tender care with which you nursed our sick and wounded sailors and soldiers has restored to us many who would otherwise have been lost, and your loving devotion soothed the last hours of those whose lives could not be saved.  With a deep sense of gratitude for your services, we wish for you the peace and' happiness you have so amply earned."  Signed-R. E.Hartley, Mayor of Rockhampton; Thos. Smith Chairman of Livingstone Shire, Jas. Armstrong, Jnr., Chairman of Fritsroy Shire.
